Cocktails + French Fries

Oishii is technically a full dinner spot. But some nights, the debrief requires sushi.

This is where my “sushi girls” land when we want consistency, sharp knife skills, and a table full of shareables. The SMU location is closest to home for most of us, and Monday nights mean half-price bottled wine - which makes lingering easy.

It’s loud. It’s energetic. It’s not intimate. But it’s lively in a way that feels celebratory rather than chaotic.

What to Drink

We typically share bottled wine (Monday is the move), though the cocktail list holds its own. The selection rotates with the seasons, and half-price bottles make trying something new low-risk.

The “Fries”

No literal fries here. But the specialty rolls are the move.

We always order the Himalayan Roll and the Royce Roll.

The Himalayan: shrimp, spicy yellowtail, tempura flakes wrapped in cucumber, topped with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, serrano, and poke sauce. Ask for extra serrano if you like a little heat in every bite.

The Royce: crab mix and tempura flakes wrapped in yellowtail, topped with thin lemon slices and sriracha. (If you’re truffle-sensitive like me, ask for the oil on the side. They’re gracious about it.)

Watching the kitchen bar team wrap cucumber sheets in place of nori and slice fish with precision is part of the experience.

Anything I’d Change

The noise level. Every location I’ve visited (SMU, Preston, Wycliff) runs loud. If you want whisper-level conversation, this isn’t it.

Can you stay awhile and talk about real life? Yes - just be prepared to lean in.

Works for date night? Absolutely.
Bring the family? Maybe - if your kids love sushi and you’re feeling spendy.
Big group dinner? Not the move.

Oishii is less “quick cocktail” and more “clear the table and stay awhile.”
Sometimes the debrief needs sushi.
